The main prize of the competition of the 25th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw is shared between:
Mateusz Kokot, for the animation of Marion Diethelm’s "Text, Buchstabe, Bild"
Tomasz Sroka, for the animation of Alain Le Quernec’s "Attention: Au Début Hitler Faisait Rire".
The two were awarded the prize in recognition of their fresh and contemporary approach, elaborating on the animated poster theme and reinterpreting it while preserving its original message.
Below is the full text of the decision.
The judges assessed 398 works submitted by 240 entrants and, in their opinion, the competition was tight. In the vast majority of cases, the competition terms and conditions were met and the submitted artistic statements responded to the theme of the competition. Selecting the best entries to be presented at the exhibition held as part of the 25th International Poster Biennale, the judges considered – apart from the technical criteria – the following aspects: originality of the approach, narrative structure, artistic value, creative approach to the original poster. They were looking in particular for projects that tell a story with a beginning, a middle and a point. At the same time, they were interested in statements that respect and preserve the original message of the poster while elaborating on it, reinterpreting it and bringing a new meaning to it.
The judges unanimously decided to divide the main prize between two entrants: Tomasz Sroka for the animation for Alain Le Quernec’s poster “Attention. Au Début Hitler Faisait Rire” and Mateusz Kokot for the animation for Marion Diethelm’s “Text, Buchstabe, Bild”, in recognition of their original approach to the subject and of the artistic quality of their works.
One or two entries for each subject given were awarded distinctions. All of them go beyond a simple animation of images from the original poster, offering an additional narrative aspect. They show a creative approach to the time aspect, using it to introduce an evolving story element. The judges believe that the results of the competition prove that the artistic medium proposed has a huge potential, meaning that moving graphics can become an equal means of visual communication to traditional graphic design.
